Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sell my energy back to the power company?

You certainly can! Whenever it’s possible, Omega Solar Energy designs systems that will produce more energy than they will consume. That means that at the end of the year, the power company will buy any extra energy that you have.

Does Omega Solar Energy offer any warranties?

Ask us about production guarantees and manufactures warranties up to 25 years

Are there any incentives for me to go solar?

There certainly are. Incentives tax credit is 30% and the government just extended that until 2032 for 10 years. That even includes installation and connection to the grid.

I’ve heard about net metering. How does it work?

Net metering lets your utility company measure your energy consumption and your energy production. The excess power that is generated by your solar panels is sent to your utility provider. Whenever the sun isn’t shining, you end up pulling energy from the utility grid. This process, where you send energy and then receive energy, is referred to as net metering.

Will having solar panels make it hard to resell my home?

Solar panels enhance the value of your home. Studies have shown that homes with solar panels sell faster than homes without. New home buyers know they can enjoy lower electric bills. The clean look and lower energy costs should mean a higher value and decreased selling time.

Common Misonceptions

Omega Solar Energy knows that there are lots of misconceptions out there when it comes to solar power. We’d like to straighten out some of the most common misconceptions and let you know the truth about this often-misunderstood energy.

The government will give you free solar panels.

Fact: Federal and state governments will not cover the cost of solar panel installation. They sometimes subsidize the cost of buying a solar panel system through certain solar incentives, but they do not provide free installations. There is also a federal investment tax credit which allows you to claim a certain percentage of the cost of solar installation as a credit towards what you owe on your federal taxes. There may also be other rebates, tax credits, or performance-based incentives, but if you see an advertisement telling you about free solar panels from the government, this is a scam.

You’ll get a monthly check from your utility company when you go solar.

Fact: This is very rare. Most utility companies will prevent you from interconnecting a system that produces far more energy than your meter history shows that you need. If you are in a position where you are generating way more than you’re using, most utilities offer net metering, which gives you monetary credits towards future electric bills. It’s rare that a utility company would send a check for excess electricity.

Solar panels aren’t efficient.

Fact: The sun produces an enormous amount of energy. Sunlight that shines on the earth in an hour and a half contains enough energy to power all the energy consumed in the world in a year. All commercially available solar panels provide plenty of power to meet your home’s needs. There will be sunlight that is reflected off the panel, or turned into heat instead of electricity, but this doesn’t mean your system is inefficient. It just means there’s so much light coming from the sun, we can’t use it all.

Solar panels aren’t good for the environment.

Fact: Crystalline solar panels are made of sand, silver, and aluminum. There are no hazardous materials involved. They are allowed to be disposed of in landfills or in many places they can be recycled. They’re built to be used for 25 years. They are extremely reliable and many that were installed back in the 1980’s are still working today. Solar power is also a cleaner form of energy than clean coal. The more coal that’s burned, the more damage is being done to the environment. That’s not the case with solar power.

Solar panels are ugly.

Fact: Modern solar panels are sleek and inconspicuous. They’re usually positioned to minimize visual impact and, when they are in plain view, they can give your house an ultramodern feel. There aren’t a lot of people out there who would describe solar panels as ‘ugly.’ If you really have strong feelings about the aesthetics of the panels, check out solar roof shingles for a really nice looking alternative.

Solar power means you’re going off the grid.

Fact: The majority of solar panel installations are tied to the grid. This lets you use solar energy produced by your system and draw electricity from the grid when needed. It is possible to install an off-grid solar panel system with the help of solar batteries, but this is rare and, in most cases, you are still on your local electric grid.
